3 Simple Ways to Extend The Life of Your Floral Arrangement

When you receive a floral arrangement from Fleurelle, we want you to enjoy it for as long as possible. The flowers we select are typically selected to be heartier varieties, but there are a few things you can do to keep them looking fresh and beautiful for just a little bit longer! Here are some simple steps you can take to keep your floral arrangement looking great.

Water Your Flowers

This is the MOST important tip. Your arrangement often arrives in a vase that is meant to supply about a day or two worth of water. You can gently separate some of the flowers and pour the water in to the vase, or use a baster like this one to easily add water to your arrangement without disturbing the flowers. Heck, thanksgiving is coming up so you might as well pick one up today! However you choose to water your floral arrangement, just know this is the simplest and most effective way to extend the life of your flowers.

Avoid Direct Sunlight

This may be counterintuitive because plants and flowers need sunlight, right? Well, the problem is that direct sunlight may cause the flowers to heat up too much and in turn they will wilt faster. To extend the life of your flowers, find a spot with partial shade that is cool. This also means that you should not place your arrangement near any radiators or appliances that generate too much heat.

Change the Water

Now, you can take things from step one a bit further and actually change the water in your vase. After a few days, it is possible for bacteria to build up in the water and this can have a negative affect on the vitality of your flowers. If you feel so inclined, here are the steps you can take to change the water in your vase:

  1. Remove any dead or dying leaves

  2. Gently remove the flowers from the vase

  3. Empty the water and clean the vase with a mild detergent. Rinse the vase thoroughly.

  4. Add new water to the vase.

  5. Cut the stems with pruning shears or a knife. It is not recommended to use scissors to cut the stems because they will crush the stem and prevent water from entering.

  6. Place the flowers back in to the vase.

Here at Fleurelle, we hope that you can enjoy your flowers for as long as possible, and the steps above can help you do just that. Of course, if you find that you just can't live without flowers, please ask us about our floral subscriptions! Call us at 240-343-7900 or email info@shopfleruelle.com.
